Minister launches mobile learning solution for child development 0-6 Years

Health Minister Edwin Poots will launch a new child development app – the first of its kind in Northern Ireland.

The Minister will be joined by professionals from social work, early years, education and mobile learning development to showcase the Child Development 0-6 Years Mobile App.

The Minister said: “This is an exciting development as it delivers learning to thousands at the press of a button. I’m fully committed to using technology in health and social care to improve outcomes for those who use our services. I’m delighted that children and young people will benefit from this innovation with practitioners able to access and use information about child development to inform their practice.”

The mobile app is a developmental tool designed to have an immediate and lasting impact on practice through its accessibility and ease of use. It will ensure that social workers, social care workers and other professionals in child care have continuous access to high quality information on child development when they need it and which will inform their practice.

The Minister continued saying; “This app will also help staff to recognise how factors, such as neglect, domestic violence, drug or alcohol misuse, can impact negatively on a child’s development and the importance of taking appropriate action as early as possible.

“This app provides the knowledge base to inform professional decision making and actions and will be a significant resource for frontline staff in safeguarding and protecting vulnerable children.”

Commenting on the working partnership between Northern Ireland Social Care Council, Skills for Care and Development, University of Ulster, Queens University of Belfast and Learning Pool to develop this new resource the Minister said; “I want to congratulate the NISCC for being forward-looking in leading this project. To do something different is courageous and to achieve such a quality product in such a short space of time is commendable. This is testimony to effective collaborative working between the public sector, business and academic partners.”

Colum Conway, NISCC Chief Executive said; “The Child Development App is the first of its kind in Northern Ireland. We are developing a series of Apps for the social care workforce. Over the next year we will be launching Apps for Child Development 7-12, Domiciliary Care and Child-minding Health & Safety.

The App is available to download free from ITunes and Google Play to use on Apple & Android tablet and mobile devices as follows:
